The inaugural edition of Sagarmatha Sambaad, Nepal’s first high-level international dialogue forum, begins today in Kathmandu. The three-day event brings together leaders, experts, and delegates from around the world to address pressing issues related to climate change, with a special focus on mountain ecosystems.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to officially inaugurate the forum, which aims to promote inclusive dialogue on critical global, regional, and national concerns.
Under the theme “Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity,” the Sambaad will host around a dozen parallel sessions on Friday and Saturday. Key topics include cross-border cooperation in the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region, climate-induced disasters, risk reduction and resilience, ecosystem services, and innovative climate financing strategies.
A special session will bring together ministers from the Hindu Kush region to explore opportunities for collaboration, while multi-stakeholder roundtable discussions will engage voices from government, civil society, and the private sector.
According to Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, more than 350 delegates from Nepal and abroad are expected to attend, making the Sambaad a significant step in Nepal’s growing role in global climate diplomacy.
The forum will conclude with a high-level session and regional roundtables on Saturday, setting the stage for future cooperation in addressing one of the world’s most urgent challenges: climate change in fragile mountain regions.
