Japan’s unemployment rate held steady at 2.5 percent in June, remaining unchanged for the fourth consecutive month, according to government data released Friday.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reported that the number of employed individuals declined slightly by 0.1 percent to 68.32 million, a seasonally adjusted figure. In contrast, the number of unemployed people remained unchanged at 1.72 million.
Among the unemployed, 800,000 people left their jobs voluntarily, marking a 9.6 percent increase from May. Conversely, 350,000 individuals were laid off by employers, down 14.6 percent from the previous month, the ministry noted.
Separate figures from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare showed that Japan’s job availability ratio - the number of job openings per job seeker - slipped by 0.02 point from May to 1.22. This means there were 122 job openings for every 100 job seekers.
A ministry official said some companies were cautious about hiring due to uncertainty surrounding the effects of higher tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration.
