Environmentalist Tommy Garnett, who has devoted his life to conservation efforts across West Africa-especially in Sierra Leone and Liberia-played a pivotal role in restoring this region. Through his NGO’s dedicated work, the Gola-Tiwai complex-comprising Tiwai Island Reserve and the Gola Rainforest National Park-has been rehabilitated after facing near devastation.
On Sunday, the site received international recognition during the 47th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in Paris, marking Sierra Leone’s first UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
