  • Republic Day Marked Nationwide: ‘Democratic Republic Is the Best Governance System’

Nepal today marks the 18th Republic Day, commemorating the historic transformation from monarchy to a federal democratic republic. The shift, rooted in the People’s Movement of 2006, culminated on May 28, 2008, when the first session of the elected Constituent Assembly officially declared Nepal a republic, ending over 240 years of monarchy.

The day is being celebrated across the country with various programs, ceremonies, and tributes, reflecting on the nation’s journey toward inclusive democracy and civic empowerment.

    A Historic Milestone
Republic Day honors the people's victory in the 2006 April Uprising, a turning point that ushered in a new era of political rights, inclusive governance, and civil liberties. The federal democratic republic system, as enshrined in the Constitution, guarantees fundamental freedoms, proportional representation, and social justice principles that have become pillars of Nepal’s democratic foundation.

    Vision of Prosperity and Justice
The establishment of a republic is more than a political shift- it is a commitment to uplift the dignity of Nepal and its citizens on the global stage. The democratic system aims to eradicate poverty, ensure access to education, healthcare, and public services, and establish strong social security systems.

Public leaders have emphasized that democracy is not just a system of governance but a way of life, rooted in liberal ideals and collective progress. They reiterated that democracy remains the most effective governance model in improving living standards and driving national prosperity.

    Celebrations and Tributes
A special ceremony is being held at the Nepal Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, attended by President Ramchandra Paudel, senior government officials, and prominent public figures. The event includes tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives for democratic change, as well as acknowledgments of veteran leaders who played pivotal roles in the movement.

Countless citizens endured imprisonment and torture in the pursuit of freedom and justice. Today’s celebration is also a moment to honor their sacrifices and reaffirm the country’s commitment to democracy.

    Leaders' Reflections
Leaders of various political parties issued statements underlining the shared responsibility to build a prosperous, inclusive, and democratic Nepal. They called for collective action to enhance economic productivity, ensure fair access to opportunities, promote employment, and uphold good governance.

Their messages emphasized the importance of handing over a strong, united, and liberal democratic state to the next generation. "If we move forward in unity, in line with the people's mandate, electoral rights, and constitutional principles, Nepal’s federal democratic republic can grow stronger and more resilient," read one of the joint statements.

    Looking Ahead
On this Republic Day, the nation reflects on how far it has come and the path still ahead. The focus now lies on institutionalizing democratic practices at every level of society, fostering a democratic mindset, and centering governance on development, inclusion, and national pride.

The celebration of Republic Day is not just a tribute to the past, but a renewed commitment to the future of Nepal future rooted in democracy, justice, and opportunity for all.
