With the pre-monsoon already underway, authorities warn that this year's monsoon could impact as many as two million people across Nepal.
According to the proposed Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan 2082 BS, around 450,000 households are expected to be affected by floods, landslides, and other monsoon-induced disasters. The estimate is based on data from the Department of Meteorology and a comprehensive analysis of past trends and risk factors.
Ram Bahadur KC, spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), said the action plan anticipates that about 10 percent of those affected may require rescue and relief support. “All provinces are expected to be impacted, so we have assigned responsibilities across various sectors to ensure preparedness,” KC told RSS.
He added that the action plan will be presented to the NDRRMA’s executive committee, chaired by the Home Minister, in a meeting scheduled for May 28. The plan will come into effect once it is approved in that meeting.
The proposed strategy includes regular monthly monitoring, evaluation, and review of disaster-related activities throughout the monsoon season.
Earlier, the Department of Meteorology forecasted extreme rainfall this year, accompanied by unusually high maximum and lower minimum temperatures. Based on these predictions, the NDRRMA has collaborated with stakeholders and related organizations to draft a detailed and responsive action plan.
Authorities are urging all agencies and communities to stay alert and take early precautions to minimize the potential impact of the approaching monsoon.
