The Dagbung trekking route, situated within the Ramprasad Rai rural municipality of Bhojpur district, is experiencing a notable surge in popularity among tourists. The area, locally known as "Dangbung" (derived from the term for rhododendron, Laligurans), is increasingly attracting both domestic and international visitors.
The route offers trekkers breathtaking panoramic vistas. The combination of vibrant rhododendron forests, which feature Nepal's national flower, expansive meadows, and the opportunity to experience authentic, locally sourced organic cuisine contributes to the trail's growing appeal.
Jagdish Rai, a resident, observed that tourists are primarily drawn to the region to immerse themselves in its natural beauty and savor dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. He emphasized the significant role the trekking route's development has played in stimulating local commerce. "The establishment of the Dagbung trekking route has led to a substantial increase in tourist arrivals," he stated.
A significant highlight of the trek is the remarkable visibility of iconic Himalayan peaks, including Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), Makalu, and Kanchenjunga, alongside a series of picturesque ridges. On clear days, the distant southern plains are also visible from this elevated vantage point.
Jogendra Rai, Chairman of Ward No. 1 of Ramprasad Rai rural municipality, explained that the trekking route was developed with the dual objective of promoting both national and international tourism and supporting the conservation of the rhododendron. "We have plans to further develop this route into a major tourist destination," he affirmed.
Chairman Rai also highlighted the potential for boosting local tourism activities and contributing to the national economy. He reported that approximately NPR 7 million has been invested in the route's construction to date.
According to local authorities, the trekking path was initially established under the Nepal Climate Model Programme. Currently spanning 7 kilometers, plans are underway for future expansion to incorporate nearby religious and tourist attractions.
Future development initiatives for the Dagbung trekking route include the establishment of homestay facilities, integration with the broader Mundum trekking trail, and the inclusion of additional sites of historical significance. The Dagbung trekking route is poised to become a cornerstone of Bhojpur's burgeoning tourism sector and a contributor to Nepal's overall tourism industry.
