A total of 402 climbers from 53 countries have received permits to climb Mt Everest this spring season as of April 27, according to the Department of Tourism. Among them, 74 are women.
Department Director Liladhar Awasthi informed us that permits have been issued to 41 expeditions so far.
In comparison, during the same season last year, 414 climbers-including 75 women and 339 men from 41 expeditions-had secured permission to scale the world’s highest peak.
The Department reported that royalty revenue of approximately Rs 684 million has been collected from permits issued for various mountain peaks this season. Officials expect this figure to rise further as more climbers continue to arrive.
To ensure a safe and orderly climbing season, the Department has established a field office at Everest Base Camp to regulate activities and provide support.
Over the 72 years since Everest was first summited, the number of climbers attempting to conquer the peak has steadily grown, leading to the setting of numerous records. Despite the well-known risks and extreme challenges, interest in climbing Everest remains high.
Among this year's aspirants is Tashi Gyaljen Sherpa from Solukhumbu, who has set an ambitious goal: to climb Mt Everest four times in just 20 days, aiming to set a new world record.
To date, more than 8,000 climbers, both domestic and international, have successfully reached the summit of Mt Everest-and the tradition of pushing the limits continues.
