The Government of Nepal has announced plans to import 600,000 metric tons of chemical fertilizer for the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83 BS, with a substantial budget allocation of Rs 28.82 billion.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel announced while presenting the annual budget for FY 2082/83 during a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Thursday. He confirmed that the entire amount would be provided as a grant to support fertilizer imports, aiming to boost agricultural productivity across the country.
In a move toward long-term sustainability, the Finance Minister also revealed that the necessary groundwork would be initiated by the Investment Board of Nepal to establish a domestic chemical fertilizer factory.
To promote sustainable farming practices, the government has allocated Rs 400 million for the Organic Agriculture Promotion Programme. This initiative aims to enhance soil health and increase agricultural output by encouraging organic farming.
Additionally, the government will promote agricultural production along key national roadways, including the Mid-Hill Highway and the Madan Bhandari Highway.
Further budget provisions have been made for the development of cash crops, livestock farming, high-value fruit cultivation, forest-based products, and integrated agroforestry systems. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to modernize and diversify Nepal’s agricultural sector.
